The Nigerian diplomatic mission in South Africa has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerian nationals, raising fresh concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in the country.
In a statement issued from Johannesburg, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche described the incidents as disturbing and called for urgent investigations by South African authorities.
The victims, identified as Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, were reportedly killed in separate circumstances involving security personnel.
According to the Consulate, Emmanuel allegedly died after sustaining injuries linked to an encounter with members of the South African National Defence Force.
Andrew was reportedly arrested in Pretoria before his body was later found at a mortuary under unclear conditions
The envoy also expressed concern over another reported death involving a Nigerian national following an alleged confrontation with the Tshwane Metro Police.
She noted that the incidents have triggered anxiety within the Nigerian community and diplomatic circles in South Africa.
Okey-Uche urged South African authorities, including the South African Police Service and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
She emphasized that all allegations must be handled through lawful procedures, stressing that no individual should take the law into their own hands.
The Consul-General warned against the growing trend of stereotyping Nigerians as criminals, stating that such generalisations endanger innocent citizens.
She said the recent killings highlight broader concerns about the treatment and safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.
The Nigerian Consulate confirmed that it is actively engaging with relevant South African agencies while monitoring the investigation closely.
It also pledged to provide necessary consular support to the families of the deceased.
Okey-Uche urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
She reassured the community of the Consulate’s commitment to protecting their welfare and ensuring fair treatment.
