The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old woman, Mrs Ogechi Ofoma, following allegations of severe physical abuse involving her seven-year-old daughter, Oluebube Ofoma, in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest followed a report received by the police on Sunday, Sept. 13, concerning injuries allegedly sustained by the child.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Awka on Monday.
Community Intervention Leads to Rescue
According to the police spokesperson, security personnel from the Ibollo community in Awada-Obosi, alongside concerned residents, intervened after receiving information about the alleged abuse.
Their intervention resulted in the rescue of the child and the arrest of her mother.
Ikenga said preliminary findings indicated that the girl was allegedly subjected to serious physical harm, including injuries reportedly caused by a hot knife.
Police Begin Investigation
The Anambra Police Command said it had commenced a detailed investigation into the incident.
Ikenga said the command strongly condemned any form of violence against children and would ensure that anyone found responsible would face the law.
He added that the police were working with the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure the child receives medical attention, protection and necessary welfare support.
Authorities Assure Public of Justice
The police commended members of the Ibollo community and security personnel for their quick response, describing their intervention as important in preventing further harm to the child.
“The welfare, safety and interests of the child remain paramount,” Ikenga said, adding that the investigation would be conducted professionally and thoroughly.
The command urged members of the public to continue reporting suspected cases of child abuse and violence against vulnerable persons.
