Ameobi joins Bolton Wanderers

Former Newcastle forward, Shola Ameobi, has signed a short-term deal with Bolton, despite manager, Neil Lennon, revealing he was unlikely to land a contract just over a week ago.
Wanderers, currently propping up the Sky Bet Championship having failed to score in seven of their 12 league fixtures to date, ran the rule over Ameobi earlier this month, yet Lennon felt the 34-year-old was too alike to Emile Heskey and Gary Madine.
“We felt Shola was similar to Emile and Gary,” Lennon said eight days ago.

“Although he did very, very good, finances are tight here so we want to make sure we’re spending the money on the right player.”

Ameobi spent the better part of his career at Newcastle United where he made his debut at 18 years against Chelsea on September 9, 2000.

The Zaria-born player made 312 appearances for the Magpies; 145 of those as a substitute, scoring 53 goals.

He was recently with Crystal Palace but was released at the end of the season after joining them from Turkish side Gaziantep BB.
