For daring to probe him, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, has sued the Senate.
Idris is having a running battle with a member of the Upper Chamber, Senator Isah Misau, and the Senate has vowed to probe the IGP’s handling of money collected from companies and highly placed Nigerians before posting policemen out.
On Thursday, Idris approached a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, seeking an order restraining the committee set up by the Senate to investigate him.
Idris, in the suit filed at the registry of the court, also wants the court to restrain the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the entire Senate from receiving and discussing any report submitted to it by the committee set up to investigate the allegations against him.
The fundamental rights enforcement suit, which was filed by his lawyers, Charles Ogoli, Emmanuel Anene and Solomon Ayangkong Ikongshul, joined Saraki and the Senate as respondents.
In the suit, the IGP stated that Misau, while raising matter of urgent national importance between September and October, 2017 accused him of mounting road blocks across Nigeria with the purpose of extorting money from unsuspecting motorists.
He also stated that the senator in the motion, also accused him of collecting illegal fees by way of security protections given to corporate organisations, eminent citizens and oil companies running into billions of naira.
Idris also stated that Misau accused him of having “unwholesome relationship with female officers in the force.”
He stated further that, “Without the 1st Respondent having regard to the relevant constitutional requirements in respect of the second Respondent’s role in investigations of allegations, he, in reaction to these frivoluous allegations, quickly constituted a committee consisting members of the second Respondent to look into the matter.”
No date has been fixed for the hearing.
