Air Force to practise fighter jet take-off, landing on highway

The Swiss Air said that the Force is preparing for a worst-case scenario and will practise taking off and landing on a highway with F/A-18 fighter jets in June.

The force said this will commence after the approval of the government on Wednesday.

The A1 highway section between Avenches and Payerne in the district of Vaud to the southwest of Bern would be closed off for 36 hours.

The A1 highway section will commence from June 4 to June 6.

Traffic would be rerouted, while the Air Force wants to test if the jets can take off and land in other locations, in case the airport is unavailable.

“The security situation in Europe had continued to deteriorate in recent years, particularly with the Russian war against Ukraine,” the government said.

The army, therefore, has to strengthen its capabilities, the air force has its resources spread out, making them more vulnerable.

“The air force should be able to operate from decentralized, possibly temporary locations if possible,” the government said.

However, the last time tests like this were carried out on a highway was in the 1970s and 1980s.
