Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, says it is committed to addressing mentorship gaps in the institution to boost junior staffers’ morale.

Prof. Mohammed Ishiyaku, the Director, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), ABU, said this at a one-day refresher training for young scientists.

The training was targeted at addressing mentorship gaps so as to boost their morale.

Its theme was: “Towards Effective Research and Development in IAR” .

Ishiyaku said the training sharpened the skills of the scientists, especially in the area of research.

He decried the dwindling standard of academic activities, stressing that the academic delivery level must be raised if the younger academics were to benefit effectively from the wealth of experience of the older ones,

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Kabiru Bala, said the training was timely and commended the research institute for putting together the event.

Represented by Prof. Danladi Ameh, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Bala said agriculture as a discipline remained the university’s strength, adding that knowledge transfer to the younger ones was part of mentorship.

He said that it was appropriate for senior academics to mentor the younger ones through knowledge transfer at  training sessions, noting that leadership without succession was a failure.
