Nigeria’s first elected president, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, is dead.
Aged 93, Shagari died at the National Hospital, Abuja on Friday after a brief illness.
The nonagenarian politician was president from October 1, 1979 to December 31, 1983 when he was overthrown by the Muhammadu Buhari junta.
The late General (then a Brigadier) Sani Abacha announced the removal of Shagari on the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in a dawn coup in Lagos, the then capital.
Shagari was in protective custody for months before he was eventually released.
His demise was announced on Twitter on Friday by his grandson, Bello Shagari.
Bello wrote: ”I regret announcing the death of my grandfather, H.E Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who died right now after a brief illness at the National Hospital, Abuja.”
