AN APPEAL FOR HUMANITARIAN INTERVENTION: THE 23-YEAR ORDEAL OF 16 ENUGU STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY MEMBERS (1999–2003 SET) OVER UNPAID BASIC SALARIES
Dear Sir,
I am writing to you on behalf of the 16 Honorable Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly who served the state dutifully during the 1999–2003 legislative tenure. We are reaching out to bring to public light the severe hardship and systemic neglect we have endured for twenty-three years due to the non-payment of our lawful basic salaries.
Since we completed our service to Enugu State in 2003, successive state administrations have consistently turned a blind eye to our statutory entitlements. For clarity, our demand is not even centered on severance packages or allowances, but on the core, fundamental basic salaries that were earned through public service to our state.
Over the past two decades, we have exhausted virtually every peaceful and administrative channel to resolve this matter:
Appeals to Past Administrations: We made repeated, formal entreaties to consecutive former governors of Enugu State, pleading for the release of our earned salaries, but our appeals were met with silence and inaction.
Withdrawal of Legal Action in Good Faith: Seeking redress, we previously instituted legal proceedings against the state government. However, out of respect for political hierarchy and in response to earnest appeals by party leaders who promised an amicable, “in-house” settlement, we withdrew the lawsuit from court. Regrettably, that goodwill was met with betrayal, as the promised internal settlement was never honored once the suit was discontinued.
Today, our situation has transcended a mere administrative dispute; it has become a profound human tragedy. Three of our colleagues have passed away amidst this protracted struggle, leaving their families in distress. In a particularly heartbreaking case, the young children of our deceased colleagues have now lost both parents, leaving tender orphans who have been forced out of school because there is no source of support left to fund their education.
Our only ray of hope in this long ordeal has been the current Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah. Unlike his predecessors, Governor Mbah demonstrated unprecedented empathy and leadership by granting us an audience to listen to our plight directly.
We are using this medium to make a humble, open appeal to Governor Peter Mbah. Having shown himself to be a listening leader committed to justice, equity, and good governance, we pray that His Excellency will extend his characteristic magnanimity to us by directing the immediate release and payment of our long-overdue basic salaries.
