The Nigerian lifter opened her competition with a best lift of 75kg in the snatch to sit third behind India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, who lifted 85kg, and Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry, who posted 77kg.
With the medals still undecided, Nyong produced an outstanding display in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 93kg to finish with a total of 168kg. Her final effort proved decisive as she overtook Henry by a single kilogram to secure the silver medal for Team Nigeria.
Earlier in the day, Nigeria’s men’s 3×3 basketball team suffered a 21-16 defeat to hosts Scotland in their fourth group game. The result leaves the Nigerian side with a 1-3 record, having recorded their only victory against Cape Verde in their opening fixture.
With 3 gold and 4 silver medals, Team Nigeria remains focused on the competitions ahead, with several athletes still in contention for medals as the Games continue in Glasgow.
