National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has called on stakeholders in Niger to be proactive in order to prevent road crashes and other disasters during the yuletide season.
Hajiya Zainab Sai’du, Head, NEMA Minna Operations Office, made the call during a stakeholders’ meeting in Minna on Thursday.
Sai’du, represented by Dr Zainab Ndanusa, Head, Disaster Reduction Risk Unit, said the meeting was to brainstorm on how to address incidents that could trigger disasters during the season.
She called on stakeholders to do their best to curtail disasters and emergencies during the yuletide season.
“This is the rationale behind the meeting, to continue to assess our risks and talk about them, with the mindset of seeking ways to avoid the consequences.
“Yuletide season is unique because it is the period that we record high volume of vehicular movements across the country.
“Experience has shown that the seasonal heavy movements had resulted to several cases of road traffic crashes, with many people losing their lives and property,” she said.
Sai’du highlighted the need for all hands to be on deck to continue to reduce disaster incidences to the minimum.
She commended the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), for ensuring safety on the roads, especially during ’ember’ months.
