Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has called on Nigerians and government at all levels to treat members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), serving in their various domains “with the honour and dignity the scheme represents in our national life”.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said the governor threw the challenge during a courtesy call of him members of the House of Representatives Committee on Youth Development.
According to him, the government and people of Bayelsa state have always accorded corps members the love and respect they deserve, because according to him, they are important and an integral part of nation building.
While expressing the condolences of the government and people of the state over the demise of a corps member serving in the state, Dickson described the incident as sad and unfortunate, while condemning the unwarranted attacks on corps members serving in some parts of the country.
Dickson restated his commitment to the welfare of corps members, adding that the permanent orientation camp in the state will soon be ready and be put to use.
The governor, who expressed his appreciation for the synergy between the government and the NYSC in the state, commended corps members posted to Bayelsa State for their good conduct and sense of diligence.
In his words: ” I am happy to receive members of the House of Representatives on their oversight function to the state.
“The synergy between the government and the NYSC is cordial and I want to also say corpers are well behaved and they are precious to the state and that is why Bayelsa treats its corpers with respect”.
Chairman of the House Committee on Youth Development, Hon. Segun Adekola, explained that they were in the state to investigate the death of a corps member and to ascertain if funds appropriated  to the  NYSC are judiciously used.
Adekola commended Dickson for building a befitting permanent orientation camp for the NYSC, provision of an ambulance and five thousand naira stipend for corps members, at the end of their service year.
Other members on the entourage of the chairman were Hon. Iboro Ekanem-Deputy Chairman; Hon. Asabe Bashir, Hon. Akintayo Amere, Hon. Segun Ogunwuji and Hon. Mukaila Kassim as well as the state director of the NYSC, Mr. Ekeocha Anthony and the PRO, Mr. Ngobua Matthew.
