Yakubu Aiyegbeni joins Reading

Veteran striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, has made a return to English football by joining Championship side, Reading.
‘The Yak’, as he was known when playing for Portsmouth, Everton, Middlesbrough and Blackburn, was a free-agent since leaving Qatari side Al-Rayyan this January.
Yakubu left Blackburn in 2012 following their relegation, and moved to China to play for Guangzhou R&F before going to Qatar for a short-term deal. Steve Clark became aware of the 32-year-old’s situation, and in need of a goalscorer at the Madejski, snatched up the Nigerian until the end of the season.
Having spent almost a decade in the Premier League, Yakubu became one of the division’s top finishers. His tally of 95 goals puts him 26th in the list of all-time Premier League scorers, ahead of the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Cristiano Ronaldo and Dennis Bergkamp.
Yakubu has not played in the Championship since going on-loan to Portsmouth in January 2003. His seven goals in 14 games fired Pompey to the First Division title, and made his move permanent that summer under Harry Redknapp. If he rediscovers that sort of form under Steve Clark he could earn himself another permanent deal and remain one of the most lethal strikers in England.
Meanwhile, Reading manager, Steve Clarke, has expressed delight on the signing of Aiyegbeni.
He said Yakubu’s signing was not a risk as he knows the striker’s qualities which will help the team.
“An experienced goal scorer, Yakubu brings a fantastic scoring record to this club and his addition will complement the strikers we’ve already got at Reading and help us to improve as a team in latter stages of the season,” Clarke told the Reading official website.
“I know all about him as a player and I have heard very good reports about him as a personality in the dressing room. He is no-risk signing for us and I look forward to him scoring goals for Reading Football Club.”
The 32-year-old Nigerian was a free agent after leaving Qatari side Al Rayyan and has agreed a contract until the end of the season
He spent nine years in England between 2003 and 2012, starting off at Portsmouth.
He also played for Middlesbrough, Everton and Blackburn Rovers before he left for Chinese team Guangzhou Evergrande in 2012.
