The Rector of Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), Dr Ibraheem Abdul, says upgrade of the institution to Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, will expand its academic offerings to meet evolving nation’s needs.

Abdul said this in an interview with oir Correspondent on Friday in Lagos.

He expressed satisfaction that the bill seeking to upgrade Yabatech to a university has passed through the second reading before the Senate.

“This upgrade, once completed, will not only expand our academic offerings but will also position the institution to engage deeper in research, innovation and enterprises that will meet the evolving needs of a digital and industrial economy,” he said.

He described the development as not merely a legislative milestone, but, also a national affirmation of the institution’s legacy and potential.

“Yabatech has, for decades, stood as a pillar of excellence in technical and vocational education in Nigeria.

“Generations of industrious Nigerians have passed through its gates, gaining skills and knowledge that power the engines of our economy.

“The movement toward a full university status is recognition of the college’s consistent academic excellence, its robust infrastructure, its impact on industry, and its role in national development.

“It is both a humbling reminder of how far we have come and a clarion call for the work that lies ahead,” he said.

The rector expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the upgrade.

“My deepest appreciations to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for his vision.

“Thank you, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, for championing this bill with clarity and commitment,” he said.

He also thanked all members of the Senate who supported the cause.

“To our students, staff, alumni and partners, this moment belongs to you as well.

“Your dedication, excellence and enduring belief in Yabatech have brought us this far.”

He urged stakeholders to join hands in making the university a world-class institution that would continue to set the pace in technical and vocational education across Africa.

He expressed the hope that the university would be a beacon of excellence for generation
