World’s oldest male gorilla, Ozzie, has died at 61.
Survived by daughter Kuchi; sons Kekla, Stadi and Charlie; granddaughter Lulu; great-granddaughter Andi, and great-grandson Floyd, all of whom live at Zoo Atlanta, Ozzie was found dead by its care team in its habitat at Zoo Atlanta on Tuesday.
The cause of death, according to the Zoo, is still not known, although it exhibited decreased appetite last Thursday and the Animal Care and Veterinary Teams were providing it with supportive care to encourage Ozzie eat and drink.
Over the past 24 hours, the teams had been treating Ozzie when it presented symptoms including facial swelling, weakness and inability to eat or drink.
A necropsy (non-human equivalent of an autopsy) will be performed on Ozzie’s remains soon, according to the Zoo management.
