The World Archery Federation on Tuesday sent a letter of condolence to the Nigeria Archery Federation and the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, on the sudden death of the President of the Nigeria Archery Federation, NAFED, Dr. Felix Okugbe, who died on Friday night in a Lagos hospital.
The letter was signed by the Vice President of the World Archery Federation, Mr. Yousouf Bayjoo, who is also the president of the Mauritius Archery Federation.
Bayjoo said in his letter: “It is with heart felt sadness that I have learned about the sudden death of our good friend Dr. Felix Okugbe, President of Nafed. Please convey my deepest condolences and that of the FAA Council, the FMTA, World Archery, and Mauritius Olympic Committee to his relatives and friends. May God almighty give courage, patience, to the grieved ones. Dr. Felix, was a busy bee and a nice guy but he took the path we all have to walk on one day so early before us. God bless him.”
In an another condolence message from Mr. Paul Zinsou, Agent of Archery Development in Africa (West), he said: “Dear Presidents, Death comes and has even hit one of us, the President of NAFED (Nigeria Archery Federation), Dr Felix Okugbe comes to bow out. He is a sports promoter on television in Nigeria. Since his election the first time, he had made the trip to Cotonou with two of its members to inquire about the immensity of his office. With his support, Nigeria was present at TIZOCATA 2012 in Cotonou. May God in his goodness welcomes him into his paradise and live the NAFED after he left to God. My sincere condolence goes to his family and Nigeria archers for whom I wish the agreement and union.”
The late Okugbe was a first class sport broadcast journalist who worked with the African Independent Television (AIT) before setting up his own out called Mundial Sports International, MSI.
He died from complications after he had a surgery in India to correct a spinal cord infection which he had battled for many years. Despite spending N4.9 million for the surgery, he came back home crest fallen when doctors announced to him that the surgery was not successful. He finally gave up the ghost at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital 10pm on Friday night. He was aged 51 years.
Before his death, Okugbe, a widely-travelled sports journalist, was waiting to be re-elected president of the Archery Federation, whose elections would hold this month.
