Mrs Basirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku, the first daughter of the late social critic and rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), on Tuesday, appealed  to President Bola Tinubu  to do his best to priotise the masses’ interest.

Fawehinmi-Biobaku made the appeal while speaking on behalf of the Gani Fawehinmi Family at the 14th memorial programme for the late Gani.

The event was organised by  the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organization (GAFAMORG).

It  held at the secretariat of the Nigerian  Bar Association, Ikeja Branch,  with the theme: “State Of  The Nation, 14 Years After Gani”.

According to Fawehinmi-Biobaku, Tinubu  believed in Gani’s principles,  policies and legacies.

She said: ”I use this medium to appeal to President Bola Tinubu to please carry on with my late father’s legacies because the president was once an activist.

“We are blessed with mineral resources, and I urge Tinubu’s government to bring about eradication of poverty, free education, good road networks.

“I want to speak to the president personally  because he came to speak with my late father in 2009 at his residence in GRA, and I was at that meeting.

“He spoke and assured my father that he would always have the interest of the masses at heart.

“Now is the time to bring those promises to fulfillment because he was once on the street; so, he knows where the shoe pinches.”

She  urged technocrats to join hands with the president to build the Nigeria of the  masses’ dream.

“If my father were alive today, he would not sit down and fold his arms; likewise, my late brother, Mohammed.

“On behalf of my mother and the 14 children of Gani Fawehinmi, we urge Tinubu not to forget  the masses,” Fawehinmi-Biobaku said.

The Lead speaker at the programme, Mr Tayo Oyetibo, (SAN), spoke on the sub- theme: “The Increase in Military  Incursions into Democratic Governance in West African Sub Region: What Lessons?”

Oyetibo expressed dissatisfaction at the overthrow of  democratic governments in Niger and Gabon by the military.

According to him, there is no legal justification for coup.

“The worst civilian government is better than than the best military government.

“I, therefore, urge our leaders to be accountable and be of good service to the nation,” Oyetibo said.

The Chairman of GAFAMORG, Dr Yunusa Tanko, in his keynote address, praised the late Gani for exemplary and courageous life.

He said that the  15th edition of the programme would hold in Kaduna State.

“This is to show that Gani does not belong to Lagosians alone, but Nigerians at large,” Tanko said.
