The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation of Nigeria (NWF) has selected two women weightlifters to represent the country at the forthcoming World Weightlifting Championships in Houston, U.S.

The championship, an Olympic qualifier is scheduled to hold from November 20 to November 28.

George Aluo, Media Officer of NWF said on Tuesday in Lagos that the National Sports Commission (NSC) approved the trip.

Aluo said that four lifters comprising of two men and two women were proposed but that the NSC only approved only the two women for the championship.

“We actually sent in the proposal for a complete team — two men and two women but it is rather regrettable that only two will go for the qualifiers.

“Rather than not having a representative at all because of insufficient funds to bankroll a complete team, it is better for the two lifters to go and compete at the event,’’ he said.

Aluo gave the names of the lifters as Mariam Usman, +75 kg and Victoria Adesanmi, 63kg.

The board member said that the necessary arrangements had been concluded for the team’s departure.

Aluo said that the team would made up of the national coach, medical personnel and other unnamed officials.

Aluo, commended NSC for its positive and prompt response to the federation’s proposal for the competition.

He tasked the male lifters who were not opportuned to make the trip not to be deterred as there would be other opportunities in future.
