WAUG: Ghanaian coaches express optimism of medal sweep

Emmanuel Abban, the Head coach of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, has expressed optimism of winning more gold medals at the ongoing West African Universities Games (WAUG) Championships in Ile-Ife, Osun.

In an interview , Abban said that his team was determined to sweep the medals in basketball as well as track and field.

He said his basketball team had played five matches and had won all, adding that his team was sure of winning more medals.

” We came all the way from Ghana with determination to win as many gold medals as possible.

” We won gold in the long jump competition yesterday and we are waiting for the 4 by 100 meters relay final today”, he said.

Also, Julius Apidogo, Director of Sports, at the Akenten Appiah-menka, University of Skills Training & Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi, Ghana, said his team was having a good outing and experience at the tournament.

Apidogo said his team’s outing so far had been good and eventful, adding that he looked forward to win more medals before the end of the games

According to him, his team had won a silver and bronze medals in track and field and they hope to win more medals.

“We are taking part in women tennis single and track and field (athletics) events in this year’s games.

“We have so far won two medals in track and field, one silver and one bronze in 400 meters hurdles and 5000 meters men.

“We are also in the quarter finals in the women table tennis singles.

“The experience is good for us, the host has also been wonderful: everything is going on fine.” he said

NAN reports that the WAUG Championship started on Dec. 15 and will be closing on Dec. 22.

Athletes from 20 universities in Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal are participating at the games.

Events being competed for at the games include table tennis, athletics, tennis and basketball

WAUG, also known as the ECOWAS Students Games, is a multi-sport event between student-athletes from West African universities.

The first edition of the competition was held in 1965 at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s premier university.(
