WaterAid Nigeria with the support from the PepsiCo Foundation in collaboration with the Lagos State Government has unveiled two water and sanitation improvement projects in the Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The projects located in the Araromi Temidire and Itele Nla communities were officially handed over to the beneficiaries on Wednesday in Lagos.

The projects are part of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) improvement initiative aimed at providing safe and hygienic water resources to underserved areas.

Speaking at the event, Mr Gbenga Oyedele, a representative of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, praised WaterAid for supporting the government’s efforts in delivering essential services to rural communities.

Oyedele also encouraged community leaders and members of the WASH committees to take responsibility for maintaining the facilities and ensuring their sustainability.

The Vice Chairman of Ikorodu North LCDA, Mr Olawale Apanisile, expressed gratitude to the sponsors and called on other organisations to extend their corporate social responsibility initiatives to vulnerable communities.

Apanisile emphasised the importance of such projects in improving the quality of life for those in hard-to-reach areas.

WaterAid Nigeria’s WASH Manager, Mr Godfrey Iloha, highlighted that access to clean and potable water is a basic human rights.

Iloha called on the Lagos State Government to replicate the initiative in other rural areas.

According to him, the goal is to help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

The water facilities include a 6,000-liter tank in Itele Nla and a 3,000-liter tank in Araromi, both powered by solar energy and equipped with treatment plants.
