Regular intake of water and fruits can help in curing haemorrhoids, also known as piles, a pharmacist, Rabi’u Hussain, said on Friday.
Hussain, who works with the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, said this in Kano.
An online publication, bupa.co.uk/health says, “Piles, also known as haemorrhoids, are swollen veins and muscle around the anus or in the anal canal.
“Anal canal is a short, muscular tube with blood vessels that connects the rectum (back passage) with anus.
“Piles can develop when this tissue becomes swollen, possibly as a result of straining on the toilet. Sometimes, piles can be painful and bleed if they become damaged.’’
Hussain said, “Staying hydrated helps prevent flare-ups and hastens the cure. Then, drink at least six to eight glasses of fluid, other than alcohol, each day.’’
He said that increased intake of fibre and consumption of more fruits and vegetables would not only cure piles, but also help to prevent it.
“The condition commonly occurs during and after pregnancy or in other situations when pressure is placed on or around the anus,’’ he said.
According to him, self care methods is useful for relieving itching and discomfort caused by haemorrhoids, but medical intervention is sometimes required to reduce inflammation that will not recede on its own.
Hussain then advised people to avoid sitting for too long and reduce intake of sugary foods.
“These are major causes of haemorrhoids,’’ the expert said.
