Victor Uwaifo dies at 80

Legendary singer, highlife music icon and guitarist, Sir Victor Uwaifo (Guitar Boy), is dead.
Uwaifo, the first professional musician to be awarded with the National Merit Honours of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), celebrated his 80th birthday in March.
The music legend, whose “Mammy Water” album was a hit for decades, died on Saturday.
One of his children, Peter “de Rock” Uwaifo, broke the news of the demise of the Professor of Visual Arts, University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Saturday.
While Peter did not disclose the cause of the death, he nevertheless expressed anguish over the passing of the music superstar.
The legendary musicologist known as ‘Joromi’ served as Commissioner for Arts and Culture under Governor Lucky Igbinedion of Edo State.
“A First Class graduate of Visual Arts, UNIBEN, Uwaifo’s undergraduate project of a king on a horse is a signature arts poster at the Ekenwan Campus of UNIBEN
“Uwaifo played the guitar with dexterity and had highly ambulant kinetic dancing steps,” Peter said.
Born on March 1, 1941 in Benin City, Edo State, Prof. Sir Victor Uwaifo was described as a musician, writer, sculptor, musical instrument inventor and University lecturer.
He was good at electric guitar, flute, saxophone, electric piano, percussion and vocals.
Some of his albums included Big Sound, Victor Uwaifo, Hold Your Romeo, Love & Romance, 5 Days A Week Love and others.
