The University of Ibadan (UI) has recorded a historic milestone with the appointment of Mrs Mariam Zakariyah, a Fellow Chartered Accountant, as the institution’s first female Bursar since its establishment 78 years ago.
The university announced the appointment in a statement issued by its Director of Public Relations, Mrs Joke Akinpelu, in Ibadan on Monday.
Zakariyah formally assumed office as the new Bursar, becoming the first woman to occupy the position responsible for overseeing the university’s financial administration.
Vice-Chancellor Commends Appointment Process
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, described the appointment as a reflection of the institution’s commitment to fairness, excellence and institutional values.
Adebowale said the selection process was transparent and conducted without discrimination based on gender or religion.
He noted that the university’s long-standing reputation was built not only on academic achievements but also on integrity, professionalism and responsible governance.
UI Maintains Tradition of Institutional Continuity
The vice-chancellor praised the immediate past Bursar, Mr Adewuyi Popoola, for his contribution to maintaining financial stability during his tenure.
He also highlighted the university’s tradition of smooth leadership transitions as one of the factors supporting its institutional strength.
According to him, the appointment of Zakariyah represents another important chapter in the university’s history.
New Bursar Promises Effective Service Delivery
Speaking after assuming office, Zakariyah expressed appreciation to the university management for providing a fair recruitment process.
She pledged to use her professional experience to strengthen the Bursary Department and contribute to effective administration within the institution.
The new Bursar also requested the continued cooperation and support of university stakeholders as she begins her tenure.
Academic Community Welcomes New Leadership
The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Ibrahim Uthman, and the Chaplain of the Chapel of the Resurrection, Venerable Victor Oladele, offered prayers for the success of the new Bursar and the continued progress of the institution.
The appointment adds to the growing representation of women in senior administrative leadership positions within Nigerian higher education institutions.
