The United Nations human rights office has demanded a full investigation into an attack on a girls’ school in Iran, describing the incident as “horrific” while stopping short of directly identifying those responsible.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for a prompt, impartial, and thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

At a press briefing in Geneva, UN human rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said the responsibility for investigating the incident lies with the forces that carried it out.

The development comes amid reports of significant casualties following military operations involving the United States and Israel in Iran. Iranian state media reported that more than 160 people were killed on the first day of the strikes.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, responding to the reports, said American forces would not deliberately strike a school.

The UN’s call for accountability reflects growing international concern over civilian protection amid the escalating military conflict in the region.
