Umeh lauds judiciary as Anambra elects councils

victor_umehThe National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, has commended the judiciary for dismissing a suit challenging Saturday’s local government elections in Anambra.

Umeh made the commendation shortly after casting his votes at his polling unit at Aguluezigbo Civic Centre in Anaocha council area on Saturday.

“I thank the judiciary for being firm by refusing to grant the request of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Federal High Court, Awka, seeking to stop today’s local government elections.

“By their action, Anambra will have democratically elected chairmen and councillors after 15 years. It is good for grassroots democracy,” Umeh said.

He wondered why APC decided to go to court to challenge the election, being in the vanguard of those calling for local government elections in the state.

Justice Bature Gafia of the Federal High Court, Awka, on Friday dismissed the suit filed by APC on the grounds of jurisdiction.

Gafia in a ruling said he had no jurisdiction over the case even as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was joined in the suit.

The APC said earlier that it would not participate in the election following allegations that the voters’ register for the poll was flawed.
