Ukraine: At least 150 tonnes of machine oil in Dnipro River

The Kakhovka dam explosion in southern Ukraine has caused at least 150 tonnes of machine oil to spill into the Dnipro River, Ukrainian officials said.

Another 300 tonnes of oil was still threatening to spill into the waterway, they added on the sidelines of a meeting of the National Security Council convened by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The governor of the Kherson region, Oleksandr Prokudin, said eight villages had been completely or partially flooded and 16,000 people in the danger zone.

About 80 settlements were at risk in the area, where fighting was also taking place.

Aerial photographs from the Ukrainian-controlled regional capital of Kherson showed that many houses in the Korabel district near the river were under water.

Ukraine blames Russia for the destruction of the dam.

However, the water also hit the Russian-held town of Nova Kakhovka on the south bank of the Dnipro.

Russia in turn had blamed Ukrainian saboteurs.
