Ujah scores in Cologne’s loss

Nigeria international striker, Anthony Ujah, continued his rich vein of goal-scoring form on Friday as he netted FC Cologne’s consolation goal in the 1-4 loss to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
Cologne started on the back foot as Bayern raced to a 2-0 lead inside the opening 11 minutes thanks to quick-fire strikes from Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery.
Ujah was, however, proving to be a thorn in the flesh of the Bayern backline with his pace and penetration which won a free kick for his side following a rare moment of panick between Jerome Boateng and Manuel Neuer midway into the first half.
The Nigerian ensured Bayern soon paid the price for leaving him unmarked in acres of space when he headed home powerfully off a Matthias Lehmann cross following good work from Jonas Hector on the stroke of half time.
The effort was just one of Cologne’s two shots on target in the first half and also represented Ujah’s second successive headed goal in back to back games following similar success in the 1-1 draw between Cologne and Hannover 96 on February 21.
Ujah almost completed his brace on 58 minutes when he smacked home a half volley from a cross from the left but he was denied by a fine reflex save by Neuer.
Ujah has now scored eight league goals and 10 in all competitions (he has scored twice in the DFB Pokal) this season for Cologne.
Friday’s defeat at the Allianz Arena means Cologne remain in 13th spot on the Bundesliga standings with 25 points from 23 matches.
