Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Monday, visited the defunct office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Enugu to confirm that the facility has been closed in compliance with the Federal Government’s directives that the offices be closed.
The directives followed the on going nationwide protest against SARS and police brutality.
Speaking during the visit, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu Police Command, Abduraham Ahmad, confirmed to Ugwuanyi that the SARS unit has been closed and that the 11 detained suspects formerly in the SARS’ cells had been transfered from the cells. “Today, we don’t have SARS in Enugu”, he said.
In his remark, the State Attorney General, Mr. Melitus Eze, disclosed that the Judicial Panel of Inquiry recently constituted by Ugwuanyi to investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra-judicial killings, as demanded by the protesters, will be inaugurated on Wednesday October 21.
Prior to the visit, Ugwuanyi visited the ailing First Republic Minister and prominent Igbo chieftain, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, who is in a hospital in Enugu.
Amaechi, who was delighted at the visit, expressed optimism that he will recover soon to reunite with his loved ones.
