Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi,
on Tuesday, flagged-off the distribution of the COVID-19 food items donated to the state by the Private Sectors Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) for the vulnerable and indigent families in the state.
Performing at the function at Queens School, Enugu, Ugwuanyi acknowledged another round of support from CACOVID, saying that the Coalition had before now supported Enugu State Government in equipping the Enugu State Diagnostic centre. The second support, being the donation of food palliatives.
He said that the CACOVID on May 5 donated 100 beds and its accessories to the isolation centres in Enugu State.
”We are happy to acknowledge another support from CACOVID and let you know that Enugu State delivered the first palliative to the isolation centres and quarters.
”All the palliatives from the Federal Government have been delivered to the appropriate places to curtail the spread of Coronavirus,” he said.
Ugwuanyi assured CACOVID that the items would get to the targeted beneficiaries. He appreciated those that had been donating relief materials to the state.
In her speech, representative of CACOVID, Mrs Chika Mbagwu, said that the association had continued to support the government in its fight against COVID-19.
”Since the outbreak of this pandemic, the entire world have been turned into unprecedented challenge in health and economic sectors.
”Alleviating the impact of the COVID-19 crises has become vital in preventing poverty from increasing in Nigeria.
”It is in this light that the Nigerian Private Sectors formed a coalition against COVID-19 to provide support to the government through the provision of palliative items for Nigerians.
”As we all know, CACOVID is an organised private sector initiative in partnership with the Federal Government, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) World Health Organisation and other agencies, ” she said.
She said that the partnership was with the sole aim of combating COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
”CACOVID is pulling resources across industries to support the laudable achievements of governments across in the country.
”We have decided to support up to 37, 000 households in Enugu State and we will always play our part in matters that involve the state and its citizens.
Mbagwu thanked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) United Bank for Africa (UBA) and others for their galvanising roles in this venture.
Representatives of widows, market women, people living with disabilities, artisans, Hausa women community and Yoruba women community were among the beneficiaries at the flag-off.
Mrs Nkechi Nnaemeka, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked Enugu State Government and CACOVID for the donation of the food items.
Nnaemeka, who represented market women, prayed that the pandemic would soon be a thing of the past as God would save the people from the deadly disease.
