Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has commended workers in the South-East state for their support of government programmes and solicited more cooperation from labour unions.
Ugwuanyi gave the commendation during the 2016 Workers’ Day Rally held at the Michael Okpara Square in Enugu on Sunday.
“I must commend the leadership of organised labour, workers and the people in general for their wonderful support during the recently concluded investment summit.
“The summit was organised to review the position and the options for the diversification of the economy of the state, while creating new employment opportunities for the people of the state.
“The summit, which aimed to showcase the vast economic potentials of the state to the global business community, drew the interest of potentially lucrative companies to invest in the state thus raising the hope of more employment for the people,’’ Ugwuanyi said.
The governor noted that the state government had paid 30 per cent equity for the cost of 100 housing units for junior workers.
He said that the state government would continue to invest in infrastructure development for the benefit of workers.
The governor also announced that his administration would address the issue of adjustment of salary chart for the state’s workforce as soon as the on-going biometric data exercise in the state was concluded.
“We have set-up a committee to examine the issue of consolidated health salary structure for health workers in the state.
“On Public-Private Partnership in the health sector, government is determining how best to implement it under the prevailing economic climate in the country,’’ he said.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Virginus Nwobodo, and his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Chukwuma Igbokwe, commended the state government for its infrastructure development in less than a year in office.
They also praised the governor for his prompt handling of the recent attack on Nimbo community.
They, however, called for a transport scheme, improved salaries and improved healthcare delivery system.
