UEFA extraordinary congress, a first step towards possible new boss

The corruption affairs in football have not only hit the ruling body FIFA hard, but also affected the powerful European Confederation (UEFA), the report said.
Its President, Michel Platini is banned for eight years in connection with a disloyal payment of around 2 million dollars he received in 2011 from the also banned FIFA boss Joseph Blatter for FIFA work done a decade earlier.
UEFA could also soon be without a general secretary if Gianni Infantino is elected FIFA president or becomes general secretary there under another president.

An extraordinary congress of the 54-member UEFA on Thursday in Zurich is to set the stage for a possible upcoming presidential election.

In order to fulfill all regulations, the annual UEFA congress set for March in Budapest was moved to May, and the extraordinary meeting added.

This, however, will only deal with financial matters and changes of statutes.

Elections need some time to be prepared and deadlines must be obeyed, but the Budapest congress will now also not see a presidential election, because Platini is to be given the chance to fight the ban before the Court of Arbitration for Sports, if his appeal at FIFA is turned down.

An election, if required, would only follow after the end of all legal means.

However, there is also speculation that Infantino wants to cover himself in case his FIFA ambitions fail.

UEFA has not installed an acting president after Platini’s suspension and ban, and Infantino could present himself as a quasi-president.

The ongoing attention, especially at Euro 2016 in France in June and July, would strengthen Infantino and weaken any other potential candidate for the UEFA top job.

UEFA is also yet to say when Germany’s Heinz Rummenigge and Italian Andrea Agnelli will officially join the UEFA executive committee as new representatives from the European Club Association, either on Thursday or in Budapest.

According to the report, UEFA has only said it will make a statement on the issue this Thursday.
