The university of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), says it will continue to appreciate and reward workers that have performed excellently in discharge of their duty towards saving lives.
Prof. Bissallah Ekele, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, said this at the 2023 UATH Annual Staff Award at Gwagwalada on Friday.
He said that the reward was also an avenue to encourage other members of staff to put in their best in the discharge of their daily duties.
“Whoever that has done well, we expect you to even do more. Nobody say they cannot win this award yearly consecutively for two, three, four, five years.
“And for those that have not won this year, I am sure if they add to what they do they will win next year but all said and done everybody is a winner,” he said.
According to him, the Sevicom unit saddled with the responsibility to monitor activities in the hospital were the ones in charge of the award.
He said Servicom in discharge of their duties identify members of staff who do their works properly and those who listens to patients’ complaints.
Ekele appreciated the Servicom unit for their relentless efforts in the past six years.
Prof. Emem Bassey, the Chairman, Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Hospitals in Nigeria (CCMDFTH), said the committee had seen a lot of best practices in UATH that must be emulated.
Bassey said that the management of UATH had transformed a lot of things in the hospital, adding that the committee had seen a block of flat for junior staff which has not been seen anywhere.
He said the idea of appreciating workers by UATH management would encourage more productive and hard work.
“Usually, it is easy to give cash award but the truth is most of those things are not sustainable.
“What is most important is when you are in the community of your peers and you are singled out to be the best.
“What I want to say, if you have not won this year you work hard to win next year.
“I am sure the awardees were selected based on very objective criteria not on the bases of ‘man know man’, so work hard next year to win, ” he said.
Earlier, Dr Anthony Bawa, the Chairman, 2023 Staff Award Committee and Servicom Nodal Officer, said the award was to appreciate unconditional commitment to be a blessing to lives.
Bawa said that the awardees had shown special commitment to duty, adding that the management had deemed it fit to appreciate them for hard work and commitment.
Dr Onalo Richard of the Department of Emergency Pediatrics Unit (EPU) whose department emerged best, said he was excited not because they won but because their efforts were being appreciated.
“You know what it means to work among children and nobody turns to say thank you for your effort but with this we are most encouraged to keep the pace.
“I want to believe that every member of my department in seeing this award will be excited to put in their best,” he said.
According to him, the department will maintain what they are doing and also sit down and check their activities and see areas they need to strengthen and improve upon.
The highlight of the event was a cash presentation of N100,000 to the UATH 2023 overall best Staff Engr. Bala Mangut and N50,000 to the best department by CCMDFTH.
