Former Military Governor of old Oyo State, General Adetunji Olurin, is dead.
He was 76.
Born in Ilaro, Ogun State on December 3, 1944, Olurin was also appointed governor of Ekiti State when former President Olusegun Obasanjo declared emergency rule and sacked Ayo Fayose in 2006.
Freedom Online learned that Olurin, who governed old Oyo State from 1985 to 1988 and commanded ECOMOG Peace Keeping troops in Liberia, passed out on Saturday morning at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) after a brief illness.
He was Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State in the 2011 general elections.
In his tribute, former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, said:
“I received the news of the demise of General Adetunji Olurin (rtd) with shock.
“General Olurin was an eminent statesman and disciplined officer who served Nigeria and our dear Ogun State with grace and candour.
“I recall his sound support towards our move to render our services to Ogun in 2003. Indeed, he was one of the earliest persons consulted and he gave his support.
“General Olurin faithfully served as the Founding Chancellor of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) during our administration.
“His passing has left a huge vacuum at a time when our nation needs more leaders of thought to help navigate the present challenges.
“I am, however, comforted that the late General has gone to rest having played his part on this side.
“My prayers are with his family at this difficult time.
“May his soul rest in peace.”
Olurin had his primary education at Christ Church School, Ilaro from 1951-54; St. Paul’s School, Odo-Ona, Ibadan, 1955-57 and Local Government Authority Modern School, 1958.
He also attended Egbado College, Ilaro, 1959-64, Technical College (now The Polytechnic), Ibadan, 1966.
He attended the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).
General Olurin served as the Field Commander of the ECOMOG Peace Keeping Force in Liberia between 1992 and 1993.
After his retirement from the military, he went into farming and later joined the PDP on which platform he contested the Ogun election in 2011 but lost to Governor Ibikunle Amosun.
