Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that the ministry will partner with Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) on how to improve the inadequacy of roads in the sector.
The minister said this on Monday at the launching of the Biometric Registration and Identification System Scheme of RTEAN in Abuja.
Amaechi, who was represented by the ministry’s Director, Road Transport/Mass Transit Administration, Mrs Anthonia Ekpa, said this was because RTEAN was one of the major stakeholders in the sector.
“The ministry will be ready to give its technical and professional advice in any area that will help harness every resource on change-driven policies,’’ he said.
Also speaking, Mr Orbi Donald, Head of ICT, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), said it was ready to create partnership with
RTEAN on health insurance with the new database system.
“At the end of the verification exercise, NHIS will like to introduce the association to the formal sector special health insurance programme which is meant for the organised private sector in the country.’’
Donald said the exercise would help RTEAN know the total population of its members and their various locations.
“If the biometrics is properly done, it will be used for the NHIS,’’ he said.
Alhaji Musa Isiwele, the Executive National President of RTEAN, said the asociation has embarked on several major projects targeted at job creation for 45,000 people.
“This is through skills acquisition and training to improve on the capacity of the members.’’
He assured that the association, with over 16 million members, would co-operate with law enforcement agencies to wipe out touting at all motor parks in the country.
