Tragedy occurred in Awe, Afijio Local Government, Oyo State last Wednesday as a middle-aged man, Jimoh Yussuf, allegedly strangled his wife, Adeola, to death.
After the dastardly act, Jimoh, a commercial motorcycle operator, committed suicide.
Some neighbours described Jimoh as a drunkard who was in the habit of beating his wife to stupor over any little excuse.
Because of his attitude, it was learned that landlords often ejected him from their houses.
The house where he killed his wife was the ninth residence. On the fateful day, he was said to have drunk himself with the local gin, ogogoro, before returning home.
When his wife accused him of drinking again, he was said to have descended on her, as usual.
Due to the indefinite strike by teachers and other civil servants, their three children were said to be staying with relatives when the incident occurred.
It was gathered that due to the beating, the wife died that night. He slept in the house and in the morning, went to a local gin base where he confided in some of his friends that he beat his wife to death the night before.
His colleagues were said to have visited the house and found that the wife was actually dead.
They immediately contacted policemen and Jimoh, sensing that he had been reported, drank rat poison.
Some policemen, accompanied by Adeola’s brother, Kabiru, went to the house and confirmed their worst fears.
They saw Adeola’s lifeless body, naked, covered with
a wrapper and laid on bed.
Her remains were immediately taken to the mortuary.
When they eventually found Jimoh, the effect of the poison was already working on him.
Some youths wanted to lynch him but were prevented by the policemen.
He was taken to a private hospital and his hands were tied to the bed. He was also guarded by two policemen.
Due to the effect of the poison, he died in the evening.
His remains were also deposited at the State Hospital in Oyo town.
