President Bola Tinubu has tasked the acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, with restoring peace and strengthening security across the country.

The president gave the directive during the swearing-in and decoration ceremony held at the State House in Abuja.

Tinubu said Disu’s appointment comes at a critical time for the nation’s security, expressing confidence in his experience and past performance. He urged the new police chief to reinforce discipline within the force, promote collaboration with other security agencies and prioritise the protection of lives and property.

“I expect you to rebuild public trust in the police, lead with fairness and professionalism, and ensure safety remains our top priority,” the president said, pledging his full support.

Tinubu noted that Nigeria continues to face threats such as banditry, terrorism and other forms of criminality, adding that innovative thinking and coordinated action would be required to overcome them.

The president also commended the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his service and contributions to maintaining law and order.

In his response, Disu expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him, describing the appointment as both an honour and a challenge.

He assured Nigerians that he would focus on improving police professionalism and strengthening public confidence in the force. Disu emphasised that citizens remain central to effective policing and pledged a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and human rights violations.

He also promised to boost morale within the police to effectively address insurgency and other security challenges confronting the nation.
