President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military Head of State, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an important figure in Nigeria’s political history.
Tinubu’s message was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in Abuja on Monday.
The President praised Babangida’s military career and his emergence as Nigeria’s leader following the 1985 military coup.
Tinubu Highlights Babangida’s Impact
Tinubu said Babangida’s eight-year administration left significant imprints on Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical development.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has,” Tinubu said.
The President credited the former military leader with initiatives that, according to him, contributed to economic expansion, infrastructure development and the establishment of institutions that continued to serve national interests.
Tinubu also attributed the continued existence of some states in the federation to Babangida’s approach to national administration.
IBB Remains Influential in National Affairs
The President said Babangida’s contributions had secured him a lasting place in Nigeria’s history.
He also noted that the former military ruler continued to contribute to national discussions despite his withdrawal from active public office.
Babangida, who lives at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State, continues to provide what Tinubu described as valuable advice and guidance on national issues.
“His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” the President said.
Tinubu Wishes IBB Good Health
Tinubu wished Babangida continued health and strength as he marks his 85th birthday.
He also prayed for many more years of life and continued service to Nigeria.
“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” Tinubu said.
Babangida served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1985 to 1993, a period that remains significant in the country’s political history
