Three police officers, four others die in Ebonyi, Oyo auto crashes

Three police officers with the Ebonyi State Police Command were killed on Wednesday in a road accident at the Isieke Junction on Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.
Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Aliyu, who confirmed the incident, said that 10 other police officers sustained injuries.
“ Yes, I am in the hospital now, we lost three officers while 10 others are under intensive care in the hospital,“ he said.
According to Garba, the accident happened while the officers were returning from a “peace-keeping-mission” after a communal crisis in Ezza-Effium, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
A leadership tussle among members of the National Union of Road Transport workers (NURTW) in the two communities degenerated into a communal crisis.
Meanwhile, a lone accident involving an articulated vehicle claimed four lives and injured 43 others on Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway about 7:30 a.m on Wednesday.
The articulated vehicle, which was carrying both human beings and animals, fell into a deep pothole while on motion and veered off the road into the bush.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Oyo State, Mrs Uche Chukwurah, confirmed the incident in Ibadan.
Chukwurah said four people died while 43 others sustained varying degrees of injury.
The sector commander said that a total number of 62 people were affected in the accident that occurred around Sekona area on Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway while 16 of them were rescued alive.
She attributed the likely cause of the accident to the driver’s fatigue, hinting that the driver probably slept off and ran into the ditch.
“The trailer was carrying goats, cows and human beings, all adult males.
“Four people lost their lives, 43 people were injured while 16 people were rescued unhurt,” Chukwurah said.
She said that the corpses had been deposited in the morgue of the Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, while the injured were taken to EbunOluwa Clinic.
