Three people, including a Russian national, have stolen 70 million Taiwan dollars ($2.17 million) from 34 ATMs in Taiwan.
The suspects apparently hacked the machines’ software on Saturday and Sunday.
All ATMs involved in the heist belonged to First Bank.
A report from local officials says the suspects were believed to have fled the country on Monday.
“Only bank clerks, security personnel and system maintenance engineers can access individual ATMs without going through the bank’s main computer.
“So, First Bank says it will first check those sources for possible accomplices,’’ the report said, citing the police.
According to vice chairman of Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission, Kuei Hsien-nung, the losses will be shouldered by the bank itself.
