President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians not to allow themselves to be instigated against others by selfish politicians.
He said the late Prime Minister, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa, never instigated anybody against fellow Nigerians, urging them to imbibe his humility.
Tafawa-Balewa was killed on January 15, 1966 during the first military coup.
Jonathan spoke at the Ibrahim Babangida Square, Bauchi on Thursday during the continuation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign rally.
He also declared that no retrogressive forces can push the party behind in its effort to develop Northern Nigeria and the entire country.
Jonathan said: “Don’t allow yourselves to be used by selfish individuals who want to instigate you against others. The Late Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, never incited anybody against others. We meant well for Nigeria. The late prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, was our great leader that led this country well and he was appreciated from North to South, West to East and he never instigated Nigerians against each other.
He only talked about unity and development of Nigeria and his revolutionary drive was in Agriculture and Education, and that is what PDP stands for”.
Jonathan also promised to focus more on other natural resources for development in his second term.
“Oil as a means of getting wealth for the country is dwindling, so if re-elected, we will emphasise more on solid mineral in bringing more development to Nigeria. My administration will utilise the abundant mineral resources scattered all over Bauchi State to improve the revenue generation of the state.
“Bauchi has a lot of solid minerals and other potential so we will work with Bauchi to exploit them maximally for the people of Bauchi and benefit of Nigeria,” the President stated
There was drama at the rally as many youths started hailing the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari.
Anytime PDP chiefs shouted ‘Up PDP’, the youth replied ‘sai Buhari’.
Jonathan’s convoy had earlier been stoned by other youths on his way to the venue.
