For failing to book a place in the quarter finals of the 2013 Federation Cup, supporters of Sunshine Stars Football Club FC of Akure attacked the playersas they lost 1-0 to Nasarawa United FC in the round of 16 encounter.
The match, played at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja, saw Malachy Iloh scoring the winning goal in the 41st minute, in a fiercely contested encounter.
All efforts by Sunshine Stars to get an equaliser proved abortive as Nasarawa United kept its defence tight.
However, trouble erupted at the end of the game as angry supporters of Sunshine Stars launched an attack on the team’s players.
The supporters said the attack was to show their displeasure over the exit of Sunshine Stars from the Federation Cup.
A cross section of fans blamed the team’s Technical Adviser, Fatai Amoo, for making a wrong selection of players to start the game.
A fan, Peter John, said “the coach’s decision to leave some regular players on the bench cost us this match.
“Players like Dele Olorundare and Paul Onobi were left to watch from the sidelines, which we aren’t happy about.
“In the first half of the match, the boys played badly, our midfield was so porous and the attackers upfront were not potent enough to convert chances to goals.”
Another fan, Wasiu Adeoye, said: “we are not happy at all, considering the fact that we travelled from Akure to Lokoja to watch this game.
However, security officials intervened immediately and quelled the tension.
