Sunshine Stars’ quest for NPFL survival suffers setback after home draw

The poor run of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure continued on Sunday as their winless run hit 14 matches after a goalless draw against visiting Jigawa Golden Stars.
The draw was recorded in their match day 21 fixture of the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
Sunshine Stars started the match on a good note with Ifegwu Ojukwu almost making the difference in the 18th minute when he fired high from defender Ebuka Akobundun’s pass.
Ojukwu got his second chance blocked in the 24th minute from Sadeeq Yusuf pass, before Yusuf was also denied in the 36th minute from Ojukwu’s cross.
The home side saw Akobundun stretchered off the pitch after an injury on the stroke of half time, adding to their woes..
Sunshine Stars’ second half triple substitutions could not make any difference as the match went on to end in a goalless draw.
Sunshine Stars remained in the relegation zone with 20 points from 21 matches.
The Dutse-based Jigawa Golden Stars are 14th with 27 points from 21 matches.
Sunshine Stars, who are under the tutelage of Gbenga Ogunbote, last won a league game on match day seven, in a 3-1 home win against Rangers International FC.
