The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged Nigerian Muslims to look for the new moon of Ramadan on July 8 and communicate findings to him.
The sultan made the call on Sunday Sokoto via a statement signed by Prof. Sambo Wali, the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sokoto Sultanate Council.
“This is to inform you that Monday, July 8 is the 29th day of Sha’aban 1434 AH and shall be the day to start looking for the new moon of Ramadan,’’ the statement said.
It listed the following telephone numbers as channels which the public could use to report the sighting of the new moon: 0803-715-7100; 0803-041-3534; 0803-507-3872; 0803-596-5322 and 0803-314-3866.
If the new moon of Ramadan is sighted on Monday, July 8, Muslims in the country would join other Muslims across the world to begin the 29 or 30 days of fasting on Tuesday, July 9.
However, if the new moon is not sighted on Monday, July 8, Muslims will automatically commence the Ramadan fast on Wednesday, July 10.
