SPOT ON WITH EDIDIONG: One scarcity too many, by Edidiong S. Akpabio

In recent years, Nigerians have moaned and groaned over the spikes and hikes in the price of essential commodities occasioned by hoarding and the quest for excessive profits.
This state of affairs which contributes in no mean measure to exacerbate the sufferings of the masses is worrisome to state the least.
While Nigerians often anticipate a surge in transport fares during the yuletide which can be explained away as a reaction of supply to the dynamics of demand, the scarcities of petroleum products and currency notes cannot be explained under any guise.
It is worthy of mention that in the last few weeks, most parts of Nigeria have experienced scarcity of currency with ATM vaults not dispensing while others including banking halls ration cash paid to customers under the pretext of being low on cash.
The questions to ask at this point is why the re-enactment of the currency redesign experience? Why was adequate printing of currency not done? And why have commercial banks not been supplied with sufficient funds? The questions are plenteous with answers seemingly scarce and hard to come by.
While no pertinent reasons have been given for the scarcity of most essentials which currently subsist, Nigerians are not ready for any more cash scarcities.
Hence, it is imperative that the federal government wade into the matter and salvage this precarious situation its citizens are currently confronted with enough of the pain lets enjoy the gains of good governance.
