The South African Football Association (SAFA) has postponed all football fixtures at all levels across the country.
This is because many of the venues will be used this weekend to host prayer sessions in honour of that country’s former president, Nelson Mandela.
“The entire world is set to participate in what will mostly be the biggest funeral in history and the South African football family will be a big part of it.
“Services will be held in stadiums all around the country and the football community are asked to join in these prayers and commemorations,” said SAFA Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Mumble.
Also, the Nelson Mandela Golf Championship at Mount Edgecombe begins a day earlier on Wednesday, to ensure that all four rounds are played before Mandela’s funeral on Sunday.
Meanwhile, a special tribute will be paid to Mandela before Saturday’s World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight title fight in Germany, American promoter Don King said on Tuesday.
Ten gongs will be sounded for Mandela just before the bout between Germany’s Jurgen Braehmer and Marcus Oliveira of the U.S. in Neubrandenburg, near Berlin, for the vacant WBA title.
