South Korea condemns North Korea’s closure of road, rail links

South Korea, on Thursday, condemned North Korea’s move to cut off all road and rail connections, local media reported.

The Unification Ministry in Seoul described it as a setback to the aspirations for unification held by the people of both Koreas, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported

Pyongyang had earlier announced the plans to cut off all road and rail connections to neighbouring South Korea on Wednesday.

He added that the border would also be reinforced with strong defence structures, state-controlled KCNA news agency reported.

The South Korean military said that in recent months, North Korea had laid tens of thousands of landmines along the border.

“We strongly condemn North Korea’s measure as an anti-unification and anti-national act that spurns aspiration for unification by our people and residents in North Korea,’’ Yonhap cited the South Korean Unification Ministry as saying.

North Korea’s closure of the remaining transport links is considered largely symbolic, as there has been no direct exchange across the heavily militarised border between the two countries for many years.
