The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the death of a man following an attack on Islamic cleric Sheikh Musa Lukuwa shortly after Friday prayers in Sokoto metropolis.
Police said the man died after he was attacked by a crowd following the incident involving the cleric.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Rufa’i Ahmad, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.
According to him, the suspect allegedly stabbed Sheikh Lukuwa in the stomach shortly after the cleric concluded leading the Friday congregation.
Cleric Receiving Treatment at UDUTH
Ahmad said Sheikh Musa Lukuwa was receiving medical attention at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto.
He added that the body of the deceased had been removed from the scene.
The police spokesperson said no arrest had been made so far in connection with the mob incident but assured residents that the situation was under control.
He appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid actions capable of disturbing peace in the state.
Background to Sokoto Religious Tension
The attack occurred amid tensions linked to allegations surrounding comments attributed to Sheikh Lukuwa, which some religious groups described as offensive.
The allegations had generated public reactions, with some Islamic organisations calling for investigation by relevant authorities.
Earlier, a Sokoto-based individual identified as Dahiru Maibarewa had reportedly made threats against Lukuwa over the controversy, leading to public demonstrations after his arrest.
Religious Groups Call for Investigation
A coalition of Islamic organisations had submitted a petition to the Sokoto State Government requesting action over the matter.
At a press briefing on Sept. 4, Sheikh Abubakar Yagawal, leader of the National Sufi Council of Nigeria, called for responsible religious communication and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
Yagawal urged government authorities and security agencies to investigate the allegations and ensure that the matter was handled according to the law.
Police Maintain Appeal for Peace
Security authorities have continued to urge residents of Sokoto to remain peaceful while investigations and necessary actions are carried out.
The police stressed the importance of allowing lawful institutions to address disputes and prevent further escalation.
