In a passionate address at the Red Chamber, Senator Orji Kalu has thrown his weight behind the establishment of the South South Development Commission. Unlike the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which is primarily focused on oil-related issues, this new commission aims to foster holistic development in the region.

Senator Kalu highlighted the dire conditions faced by the people of the Niger Delta due to extensive oil exploration and exploitation. “The people of the Niger Delta are suffering as a result of oil exploration and exploitation,” he stated. “They don’t have clean water to drink or land to farm as both have been contaminated.”
The senator emphasised the urgent need for a development-based commission that addresses the broader needs of the region. “There is a need to support the bird that lays the golden egg,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of nurturing the region that significantly contributes to Nigeria’s economy.
The proposed South South Development Commission aims to provide sustainable solutions to the environmental and socio-economic challenges plaguing the Niger Delta. By focusing on comprehensive development rather than just oil-related issues, the commission seeks to improve the quality of life for the residents, ensuring access to clean water, arable land, and other essential resources.
Senator Kalu’s advocacy for this commission reflects a growing recognition of the need for a more inclusive and sustainable approach to development in the Niger Delta. His call to action urges fellow lawmakers and stakeholders to support this initiative, which promises to bring much-needed relief and progress to the region.
In conclusion, the establishment of the South South Development Commission represents a significant step towards addressing the long-standing issues faced by the Niger Delta. With leaders like Senator Orji Kalu championing this cause, there is hope for a brighter and more prosperous future for the people of this vital region.
