The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to convene a National Security Summit aimed at examining ways to improve the country’s security framework and develop stronger responses to emerging threats.
The summit is scheduled to take place from October 12 to October 13 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.
The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, announced the dates during plenary on Tuesday in Abuja.
Summit to Focus on Security Reforms and Collaboration
According to Akpabio, the event is themed:
“Strengthening Nigeria’s National Security Architecture: Innovation, Collaboration and Resilience in a Changing World.”
He said discussions would begin at 9 a.m. daily, with lawmakers and key stakeholders expected to examine measures aimed at improving national security coordination.
The Senate President described the summit as an important opportunity to assess existing security structures and identify areas requiring improvement.
Lawmakers Urged to Develop Solutions
Akpabio called on senators to actively participate in discussions focused on creating conditions where Nigerians can carry out their daily activities safely.
He particularly highlighted the importance of ensuring that citizens can return to their farms and economic activities without fear.
He also encouraged security agencies to participate fully in the summit and provide insights that could contribute to stronger national security strategies.
Stakeholders to Discuss Future Security Framework
The Senate President said the gathering would bring together relevant stakeholders to discuss:
- improved security architecture;
- stronger cooperation between agencies;
- innovative approaches to emerging threats;
- national resilience.
He described the summit as overdue and said the Senate was committed to contributing to solutions addressing Nigeria’s security concerns.
Senate Adjourns Plenary
Following the announcement, the Senate adjourned plenary until October 13, coinciding with the conclusion of the summit.
The event is expected to bring together lawmakers, security officials and other stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for improving security across the country.
