Four years after his exit from the Upper Legislative Chamber, Senator Smart Adeyemi is returning to the Senate.
Adeyemi, a former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi West, defeated his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Dino Melaye, on Saturday in an election held in 53 polling units across seven local governments.
The Returning Officer for the election, Professor Olayinde Lawal, declared that Adeyemi polled 88,373 to defeat Melaye who got 62,133.
Other results showed that Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came third with 659 votes, John Olabode of the African Democratic Congress, 262 votes and Adeyemi Taiwo of the Nigeria Elements Progressive Party (NEPP), 119 votes.
