Three people have been killed by suspected sea pirates after attacking two passenger boats in Bayelsa State.
The attack took place along the boundary area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State and Nembe Community in Bayelsa State.
While the Bayelsa Police Command confirmed the killing of two persons in the attack and the theft of the sum of N1.5 million from one other passenger, a top official source of the Nembe Local Government Area confirmed three persons killed.
The sea pirates attacked the passengers traveling along the Port Harcourt -Nembe sea route, identified as Kilometre 46, a boundary community between Rivers and Bayelsa states.
Though the identities of the victims were yet to be ascertained, the driver of the boat and other passengers sustained bullet injuries and are now receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in Yenagoa.
Another gang of pirates in a separate attack carted away N1.5 million and an outboard engine belonging to another passenger traveling along the Nembe Waterways.
A top official of Nembe Local Government,who pleaded anonymity, described the attack as gruesome as passengers travelling along the Waterways are now gripped with fear.
He appealed to security agencies in the state to beef up security in the Waterways to stem further attacks in the locality.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident, saying that the location was not within the jurisdiction of the police command.
